All You Should Know About Rums

How Is Rum Prepared?

Rum is a spirit that is obtained by distillation of the fermented sugarcane, sugarcane molasses, sugarcane syrup or other by-products of sugarcane. It is distilled to contain less than ninety-five percent alcohol and bottled at around forty percent alcohol. Most distillers buy molasses instead of making it themselves and add water and yeast to it. Wash is created and then fermented. While some distillers use specially cultivated strains, others use wild yeasts.
Distillation can be done by using either a column still or a pot still. Comparatively, pot stills are more expensive and less efficient than column stills. Typically, lighter rums are prepared in column stills and heavier rums in a pot still, but a few rums are a combination of both column and pot. The process of converting sugar into alcohol using yeast is called fermentation. It is done in large metal tanks that are regularly monitored. Depending on the type of rum that you are producing, fermentation can last from one day to several weeks.

Demerara Rum

Demerara rum is a kind of rum that is prepared in Guyana, located on the northern coast of South America. The country has been producing sugar since the seventeenth century and is recognized as the original rum supplier to the British Navy. However, today, the only active distillery in Guyana is managed by Demerara Distillers. Demerara rums have the same style as Jamaican rums, but they have a burnt smoky flavor. The company is famous for producing various types of rums.
